Veules-les-Roses
One of France's most beautiful villages
The jewel of the coast. Listed among France's most beautiful villages, crossed by the Veules — Europe's shortest coastal river, 1,149 metres. Half-timbered houses, watercress beds, mills, and a pebble beach below.
The essentials (02)
-
The watercress path
The path follows the Veules through the old watercress beds — springs, stone bridges, working mills. Allow 45 minutes there and back. This is the spot.
-
The beach & the oysters
A crescent of pebble beach beneath the cliffs. On the corner, Les Mouettes — Olivier's shack — serves platters of oysters raised on site. Book at weekends.
Getting there — what to know
In the morning to avoid the crowds. On a weekday if you can. September–October is ideal — fewer people, golden light on the timber framing.
- Free · market square (often full in summer)
- Les Mouettes · beach shack · €10 a dozen
- La Lumière de Veules · remarkable sourdough
- A few little homeware spots on rue du Marché
